Documents are always [READ ONLY]

on our sites in sharepoint, all documents say [READ ONLY] in the top blue bar
when you open them. However you can change them and save to them, is there a
reason this is showing up? once you make a change and save, read only goes
away. if you then close the document and reopen it, it apears again.

Thanks in anvance for your responces

I am also having this problem. Using Word, when I open a document stored in
a Shared Folder on another computer, the file appears as Read-Only in the
blue title bar. The folder on the other computer is NOT marked Read Only.

Thanx for the help. I can't find which thread that Manfred was answering
Diana in.

Hi,

We are experiencing the ReadOnly problem with a bit of a twist. We have
users on two different sites connecting to a Sharepoint server. The users on
the one site constantly get the ReadOnly title - even when they use the
correct check-out and "Edit in Word" procedure.

The users have noticed that they can work correctly when they are made
Administrators of their local machine. This implies that there is a
temporary folder somewhere that is locked in read-only mode or something.
Can anyone validate this assumption and possibly identify the directory?

PS - the two sites use different policies and procedures - so it is
obvious that the one site's desktops are more "locked down".

Regards,
JamesA

Hi,

I found a reference to a KB article that may solve the issues in this
thread - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=870853 talks about adding a
OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing key to the registry.

Could anyone explain what this key actually does?

Hi,

We opened a Microsoft Premier call and Ayla (MS consultant) found the
solution - the user did not have registry permission on all the Office keys
(unless they were local admin of course).

This will probably differ on a case by case basis - we used the regmon tool
(similar to filemon) to find this problem.

So it is obvious that the registry key below can be set to whatever but
cannot be read....

We decided to go full blast and grant full access to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MediaProperties
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft

as well as file locations
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

We are having similar problems and try to track them down for the last few
days. I set up a MS Virtual Machine running only Office 2003 SP2 (german) on
a Windows Server 2003 SP1. Latest Windows & Office Updates are applied. In
the VM I work as "Administrator". Therefore registry access (as you wrote in
the previous post) shoudn't be an issue.

I then "played" around with different real and implicit document checkouts
("checkout" / "edit in MS Word" function by using dropdown). I opened
documents alternating from "both sides", meaning from my PCs IE and from the
IE running insied Virtual PC.

I configured IE to not use any http proxy (which we normally do because I
figured that OPTIONS or WebDAV requests might be filtered by our Reverse
Proxy [methods described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838028/en-us])

Funniest things are happening: Sometimes I could open Documents from one
side (so either from normal Client IE or from VM IE) writable, but only "read
only" from the other although using the same user credentials. Worst thing I
experienced (also seen on Google groups): checked out a document using the
drop down menu function, opened the doc "from the other side" using the same
or different user credentials: read only as expeced. Then opened the document
using "edit with .." on the first side and getting: this document is checked
out by <my own login>. Doc is then opened read only!!

I could not find any real logical relationship so far; I'd just call it a bug!
